Frequently Asked Questions

  • Whether your donation is tax-deductible depends on several factors. Here’s how to determine if you can claim a deduction on your U.S. federal income tax return.

    1. Recipient organization type

    • Donations are generally deductible when given to a qualified charitable organization recognized by the IRS as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3). This includes many public charities, churches, educational institutions, and some foundations.

    • Gifts to individuals, political organizations, most for-profit entities, and some nonprofit types (e.g., 501(c)(4) social welfare organizations) are not deductible.

    1. How to verify an organization

    • Ask the organization for written confirmation of its tax-exempt status or a copy of its IRS determination letter.

    • Use the IRS “Tax Exempt Organization Search” tool to confirm an organization’s 501(c)(3) status (search by the organization name or EIN).

    • Small organizations and churches may not appear online but can still be tax-exempt; request documentation directly.

    1. Types of donations that are deductible

    • Cash gifts (including checks and credit card donations) to qualified charities are deductible.

    • Donations of property (clothing, household items, vehicles, securities) can be deductible. The amount allowed depends on the type of property, its condition, and fair market value rules.

    • Volunteer expenses that are unreimbursed (mileage, supplies) may be deductible if directly connected to charitable service; personal time is not deductible.

    1. Documentation and recordkeeping

    • For any cash donation under $250: a bank record (cancelled check, credit card statement) or a written communication from the charity is sufficient.

    • For cash donations of $250 or more: you must have a contemporaneous written acknowledgement from the charity stating the amount, whether you received goods or services in return, and a description/value of any goods/services provided.

    • For noncash donations over $500: file Form 8283 with your tax return and keep receipts describing the property and how you acquired it.

    • For noncash donations over $5,000: an independent qualified appraisal is generally required, and additional IRS reporting rules apply.

    1. Benefits received in return

    • If you receive goods or services in return for your donation (e.g., tickets, dinner, gifts), you can only deduct the amount that exceeds the fair market value of the benefits received. The charitable organization must provide a good-faith estimate of the value of those benefits.

    1. Limits on deductions

    • Deductions for charitable contributions are generally limited to a percentage of your adjusted gross income (AGI), commonly 60%, 30%, or 20% depending on the type of donation and recipient. Excess amounts may be carried forward for up to five years subject to rules.

    • Special temporary rules may apply in certain tax years (e.g., for certain cash donations to public charities).

    1. State taxes

    • State tax treatment of charitable donations varies. Check your state tax rules or consult a tax professional.

    1. When to consult a tax professional

    • If your donation is large, you donated property with complex valuation issues, you received significant benefits in return, or you need help with carryforwards and AGI limits, consult a tax advisor or CPA.

If you want, tell me the type of organization you donated to (name and whether it’s a 501(c)(3)) and the donation amount/type, and I can help determine the likely tax treatment.
